Birdland Park & Gardens

Sightseeing attraction | Cheltenham | England | United Kingdom

Birdland Park & Gardens is a fascinating attraction near Cheltenham, specifically located in Bourton-on-the-Water, in the heart of the picturesque Cotswolds in England. This wildlife park covers approximately nine hectares and offers a charming combination of lush gardens, woodlands, and riverbanks along the River Windrush. It is home to one of the largest collections of exotic birds in the United Kingdom, making it a popular destination for families, nature lovers, and animal enthusiasts who want to experience a diverse bird world and additional attractions.

The park was originally founded in 1957 by Len Hill, a man known as the "Penguin Millionaire," and relocated to its current location in 1989. It houses over 500 birds from more than 130 different species, living in a mix of free-flight zones and over 50 aviaries. Highlights include the only breeding colony of King Penguins in England, which can be seen on the so-called Penguin Shore. These majestic birds captivate visitors with their elegant appearance and playful behavior. In addition to the King Penguins, there is also a group of Humboldt Penguins, whose comical antics often provide entertainment. Other notable residents include flamingos, pelicans, cranes, birds of prey, parrots, cassowaries, and rare species such as the Waldrapp Ibis, which inhabit naturalistic habitats along the river or in specialized enclosures.

In addition to the impressive bird diversity, Birdland also offers other experiences. The Jurassic Journey is a particularly popular area where visitors can stroll through a forest path and discover life-sized dinosaur replicas. Over 30 different species, including Brachiosaurus, Spinosaurus, and Velociraptor, are hidden among the trees, inviting a journey into prehistoric times. This section is an exciting addition to bird watching for both children and adults. In the Encounter Zone, visitors can also have direct contact with animals such as giant tortoises, rabbits, guinea pigs, or even snakes, making the experience interactive and educational.

Another highlight is the Out of Africa area, which celebrates the amazing biodiversity of African bird species. Colorful birds such as hornbills, turacos, and a colony of village weavers impress visitors with their elaborate nests. The park places great emphasis on replicating natural habitats, providing the animals with a species-appropriate environment and offering visitors an authentic nature experience. Additionally, there is an Indoor Discovery Zone where exotic birds and other small animals are presented in air-conditioned rooms, which is a welcome option on rainy days.

Birdland Park & Gardens is not only a place of entertainment but also of education. Regular feedings and talks, such as those about flamingos, penguins, pelicans, or owls, are conducted by the keepers, providing insights into the behavior and needs of the animals. Special events take place throughout the year, such as International Owl Awareness Day with programs dedicated to owls or seasonal events like Easter, where visitors can observe chicks hatching. These activities make the park a vibrant place that is constantly evolving and offering new experiences.

The facility is family-friendly and mostly wheelchair accessible. The paths are mostly flat and wide, making them accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, although some sections may be uneven due to the natural environment. Dogs are also welcome as long as they remain on a leash, enjoying the forest paths and the diverse scents of the park just as much as their owners. An on-site café offers simple food and drinks, and there are numerous seating areas and picnic areas inviting visitors to take a break.

The surrounding area of the park adds to its charm. Bourton-on-the-Water, often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," is a charming village with flat stone bridges over the River Windrush and an idyllic atmosphere that perfectly complements a visit to Birdland. The Cotswolds themselves are known for their gentle hills, picturesque villages, and a landscape that invites exploration. The park seamlessly blends into this environment, offering a natural complement to the region's other attractions.

Birdland Park & Gardens is a place that harmoniously combines nature, history, and entertainment. It not only provides the opportunity to see rare and exotic birds up close but also offers a diverse program that appeals to both young and old. Whether observing the penguins swimming, strolling through the Jurassic Journey, or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the gardens, this wildlife park leaves a lasting impression and makes every visit an unforgettable experience in the Cotswolds.

It’s such a beautiful place to visit especially for a family. We had a wonderful time with all type of birds. Our most favourite bird was penguin and they were swimming and jumping around. Even flamingo were looking so beautiful. You should go early to spend some more time in the birdland park. I will highly recommend this place to you.

For someone who loves birds, this place is a must! A good selection of birds to see. However, since my last visit a few years ago nothing has really changed apart from spending money on the cafe. I would like to see some money spent on the site itself as it is looking a bit tired!

Great fun for the family Pretty small so don’t plan to be there for the whole day. Can be done in about 2-3 hours. Bourton gets busy towards lunchtime on weekends so get there early.

We came here on a cold rainy day and still had a fabulous time with the kids (5 & 3)!! Really lovely and well maintained place, with a good variety of fabulous birds. We loved how close you can get to the penguins and also see them swimming underwater. The talks were good too. Plenty of benches and picnic spaces around the place. A fun dinosaur dig zone for young archeologists too! We'll definitely be back. We spent 3 hours there, then went and visited the village for a bit and then came back in for the penguin feed. However I would have liked to know that there was no free parking onsite only payed parking nearby. So add an extra £6+ to your daily budget.

I've been coming to Birdland every since I can remember, way back when the whole colony were from the Batman movies - or so my mother informs me! So, I fondly remember growing up seeing Seth and friends - sorry Spike! - and I'm glad I can now share my love of Birdland with my young niece and nephew, and friends who have never visited before. The penguins are always the highlight of my visit. But it's also lovely to see the other birds, too, especially the young flamingo chicks and the owls. My niece and nephew love the colourful parrots and macaws, too, and the dinosaur nature reserve is a firm favourite. Yes, it's overgrown - but isn't that how a nature reserve should be!? Untouched and left to grow more naturally. I was also pleased to see screens across the penguin pool viewing area. I've seen videos on social media of people touching them, and encouraging others to do so!... It's great to see this is now deterred. The new pool and enclosure is looking great, and I love the subtle nod to former resident 'Missy', too. The staff and keepers are always very friendly and knowledgeable, and we enjoyed watching the penguin feed. We were also lucky enough to a snippet of Pablo and Splash being read and got 2 books signed. A fab day out and as an annual pass holder, I'll definitely be back soon!

– A Must-Visit in Bourton-on-the-Water Birdland Park & Gardens is a fantastic place to visit, especially if you love birds and nature. The park is home to a wide variety of birds from all over the world, and one of the highlights is getting up close to the penguins, which is a rare experience. The feeding times are particularly fun, as the staff share interesting facts about the birds, making it both an entertaining and educational visit. If you arrive right at opening time (10 AM), you’ll have the whole place to yourself for a while, which makes it even more special and peaceful. The layout of the park allows you to explore freely at your own pace, with plenty of information available about the different species. There’s a friendly and welcoming atmosphere throughout, and The Nest Café offers good food and drinks, perfect for a break.

We had a great time here. Even took the dogs with us! Staff were very helpful, everything was clean and tidy. The birds were fascinating, some very much wanted to interact and it was amazing to see some birds had absolute free reign but don’t leave as they’ve got it so good.
